When Did You Last Actually Read Your Deodorant Label?
Go check it. Right now. Pick up whatever's on your bathroom shelf and actually read what's in it.
I'll wait.
If you're like most people, you either can't pronounce half the list or you've never once thought to look. We obsess over food labels. We question what goes into our bodies. But what goes onto our skin? We've been surprisingly unbothered.
And while many of us pay close attention to what we eat, we rarely stop to think about the products we use every single day. Deodorant is one of those products that becomes part of a routine often without much thought about what's actually inside it.
Maybe it's time we got a little more curious.
Let's Talk About Aluminium
The active ingredient in most conventional deodorants and antiperspirants the ones lining every Nairobi supermarket shelf is an aluminium compound. Aluminium chlorohydrate. Aluminium zirconium.
Aluminium-based antiperspirants work by temporarily reducing the amount of sweat that reaches the skin's surface. That's what helps keep underarms feeling dry.
Sweating itself isn't the enemy. It's one of the body's natural ways of regulating temperature, especially under the Kenyan sun.
An aluminium-free deodorant takes a different approach. Instead of reducing sweat, it focuses on managing odour while allowing your body to sweat naturally.
An aluminium-free deodorant works differently , it lets your body do its thing, while neutralising odour using ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, baking soda, cornstarch, and zinc.
The Underarm Darkening Nobody Talks About
Here's one for the group chat: if your underarms have been getting progressively darker over the years, irritation from certain products may be one of several contributing factors.
Melanin-rich skin can be particularly prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Repeated irritation from shaving, friction, or certain product ingredients may contribute to darkening over time. It's a gradual process that many people assume is simply normal for their skin.
While underarm darkening can have several causes, choosing gentler products may help reduce irritation and support a more even-looking skin tone over time.
"But What About Fragrance?"Â A Smarter Conversation
This is where we need to be honest with you, because the clean beauty world has gotten a little preachy about this.
"No synthetic fragrance" has become a badge of honour in the natural skincare space. And we get it , some synthetic fragrance ingredients are problematic. Phthalates, in particular, are worth avoiding.
But here's what we've learned making deodorants by hand in Nairobi: not all lab-made fragrance is the villain it's been made out to be. Some essential oils, mint being a big one , can actually irritate sensitive skin more than a well-formulated synthetic scent. There's a reason why IFRA (the International Fragrance Association) exists: to set safety standards for fragrance ingredients used in products that sit on skin.
At Hues of Earth, where we use fragrance, it's IFRA-approved and phthalate-free. That's the standard that matters. Not the marketing buzzword on the front of the bottle ,the actual safety assessment behind it. We'd rather be honest with you about what we use and why than chase a "100% natural" label that doesn't always tell the full story.
What's Actually in a Hues of Earth Deodorant Balm
Nourishing butters to moisturise and protect the skin barrier. Your underarm skin takes a beating from shaving and daily product use. It deserves something that actually looks after it.
Lightweight oils — the kind that absorb cleanly and don't leave you feeling greasy to keep the skin soft and support the formula's texture.
Zinc for odour control and skin health. Quietly one of the hardest-working ingredients in any serious deodorant formula.
A gentle touch of baking soda — less than most formulas use, because we know some skin is sensitive to it. Enough to neutralise odour. Not enough to cause a reaction.
Clays and absorbents to manage moisture without blocking your sweat glands. This is what keeps you comfortable throughout the day.
IFRA-approved, phthalate-free fragrance or essential oils, chosen deliberately based on skin safety not just because they smell good.
No aluminium. No parabens. No fillers. Everything in there earns its place.
Making the Switch: What to Actually Expect
Nobody tells you about the adjustment period and then people give up before it gets good. Here's the honest version:
For the first 2 to 4 weeks, your body is adjusting to a different type of deodorant. You may notice changes in how much you sweat or how your underarms feel as you make the switch. That's normal for many people.
After that? Many people find that their underarms feel more comfortable and less irritated than they did before making the switch.
A few tips for the transition:
- Apply to clean, dry skin — this makes the biggest difference in how well any deodorant performs
- A little goes a long way with a balm formula — warm a small amount between your fingers and press in
- Give it the full month before you decide
The Question Worth Sitting With
You didn't choose your deodorant because you researched it. You probably chose it because it was there, or because someone in your house used it, or because the advert said it would keep you dry for 48 hours.
That's how most of us started.
But you're here now, reading this. And that kind of curiosity — about what you're putting on your body and why — is exactly how things change. Not just for your skin. But for the kinds of products that get made, supported, and kept on shelves.
We make our deodorant balms by hand, in Nairobi, with full transparency about what's in them. That's not a marketing line. It's just how we work.

A Note From the Founder
I started making deodorants because I wanted products that felt effective without feeling harsh. Every formula we make at Hues of Earth is tested, adjusted, and refined with that goal in mind: helping people feel comfortable in their skin without overcomplicating it.
We believe people deserve products that are thoughtfully made, transparent about their ingredients, and enjoyable to use every day. That's the standard we hold ourselves to — and it's the standard we continue to build on with every batch we make in Nairobi.
